Het is weer tijd voor de jaarlijkse tentoonstelling in Knokke-Heist.

Van 11 februari tot 23 februari 2012 gaat de tentoonstelling van het Vrij Atelier, De Marge, Jeugd- en Kunstencentrum terug door in het

Cultureel Centrum Scharpoord

Meerlaan 32

8300 Knokke-Heist.

Telkens van 10u tot 19u kan je deze tentoonstelling gratis bekijken.

Het is een héél gevarieerde tentoonstelling, waar je, natuurlijk, mijn werken kan bekijken, maar ook de vele werken van collega-keramiekers en andere kunstvormen die gaan van tekenen, schilderen (aquarel, acryl, olie,...), handwerk (quilting, naaien,...), glas graveren, enz...

Heel leuk zijn ook de werken van de kinderen die de woensdag namiddag of de zaterdag namiddag hun eerste smaak met kunst proeven. De werken die ze ieder jaar terug gaan voorstellen zijn vaak erg verrassend! De technieken die gebruikt worden zijn écht leuk gevonden.

Ik kijk er alvast écht naar uit om enerzijds deel te nemen aan de tentoonstelling, voor de zoveelste maal, maar ook zelf de tentoonstelling te gaan bekijken, bewonderen en zien wat collega-kunstenaars gerealiseerd hebben!

Buren bij Kunstenaars '11 was voor mij dit jaar een fantastische ontdekking met kunst in de regio Roeselare, Gullegem, Bissegem, Zwevegem, Ardooie.

Op de site vind je alle informatie : wie doet mee, waar, wanneer, welke kunstdiscipline of categorie, maar ook hoe het atelier bereikbaar is, of het groepen kan ontvangen, enz...

Ook volgend jaar gaat dit terug door in West-Vlaanderen. Al jaren wil ik graag eens meedoen met dit fantastisch evenement die een initiatief is van de provincie West-Vlaanderen, maar... ik woon op de grens van de provincie Oost-Vlaanderen... Jammer...

... maar ons eerste bezoek was aan " 't Muzenestje " in Roeselare. Bezoek eens hun site op http://www.nl.tmuzenestje.be/ en zoals ze op de website al zeggen is deze plaats een kosmopolitische plaats, die een bezoek meer dan waard is. Er waren vele disciplines te zien en na 't bezoek spraken we met de organisatoren en hoorden we dat ze op zoek waren naar een "pottenbakker/pottendraaier" en na een aantal minuten was ik verkocht! Dit weekend kon niet meer stuk! Volgend jaar kan ik meedoen, in Roeselare, in 't Muzenestje!

De rest van 't weekend hebben we een pak adresjes bezocht. Hier zijn er een paar van:

Claerbout Els in Gullegem woont in de Pottenbakkershoek en deed wat demonstraties van raku bakken. In Wevelgem bezochten we "Atelier Griet". In Gullegem zagen we Kunsthuis ApArt waar ook een aantal kunstdisciplines aan bod kwamen, glaswerk, keramiek en schilderkunst in een groot industriel bouwwerk waar de stukken mooi tot hun recht kwamen. We werden er ook héél hartelijk ontvangen. Ook in Gullegem zagen we de kleinere creaties van Soens Gudrun, zilverjuwelen en keramiek. In Roeselare, de keramiek werken van Carrein Arlette, maar de mooiste souvenirs waren bij het eerste bezoekje, combinatie van poëzie, schilderkunst, houtbewerking, keramiek, edelsmeedkunst, papier maché,...

Dus hou de site van Buren bij Kunstenaars in 't oog en kom mee genieten van kunst in eigen regio, volgend jaar in 2012!   

't Is nu een tijdje geleden dat ik nog iets gepost heb op deze blog, maar nu ik wat tijd heb, wil ik nog één en ander delen. Hier nog wat foto's van wat creaties die in juni 2011 uit de oven gekomen zijn : 

Dit zijn een aantal creaties die in 't vrij atelier "De Roer" in Knokke-Heist gedraaid zijn. Een aantal grotere kommen, een tweetal ovenschalen en verder een pot met fantasie-deksel en twee grote kruiken geïnspireerd op Griekse stijl.

De glazuren zijn eenvoudig, wit, blauw (S5 van bij Johan Dewaey in Blankenberge) en een roodbuine glazuur. Bij het spuiten is de binnenkant niet afgedekt zodat wat van de glazuur van de buitenkant overloopt in de glazuur aan de binnenkant van het voorwerp.

Op de foto rechts zie je nog eens een overzicht van alle creaties die uit deze bak gekomen zijn. Hier staan ze dicht bij elkaar gestapeld, en zie je duidelijk de mooie glans in de glazuur.

Links nog eens het voorraadpotje met de fantasie-deksel, die eigenlijk gewoon een stuk klei is waarin een knobbel in gewrongen is. Deze is dan vastgezet met wat kleislib op het deksel.

Intussen heb ik me terug ingschreven in het vrij atelier in Knokke-Heist waar ik terug wekelijks de collega's vergezel in het creëren van nieuwe zaken. M'n inspiratie is terug heel actief en ook thuis heb ik een aantal, niet zo evidente, dingen gedraaid. Deze zijn nog in creatie-fase en zullen later hier nog wel een plaatsje vinden.

Op 22 mei ben ik ook naar de "Biennale de la Céramique" in Steenwerck gaan kijken. Een mooie verzameling van een aantal uitverkozenen amateur- en professionele keramiekers toonden hun mooiste werken. Sommigen waren bekend, andere totaal nieuw.

Er waren de vertrouwde kleine werken te zien, maar ook grote werken die een "waw-effect" als gevolg brachten. Speciale baktechnieken, zoals bakken in een hout-oven, raku, rooktechnieken, enz... waren duidelijk aanwezig.

Ik was ook in gezelschap met iemand die voor de eerste keer in aanraking kwam met keramiek. Ze was zeer geïnteresseerd en keek met grote ogen naar de verschillende vormen, kleuren en technieken. Een eerste kennismaking met raku, het bakken van een tweetal hangertjes met speciale raku-glazuren, tot de afwerking ervan... en een glimlach als resultaat!

Misschien heeft iemand m'n "Hercules Kever" gezien in Knokke-Heist, Cultureel Centrum De Scharpoort in September... tijdens de tentoonstelling OKK of "Oost Kust Kunst"

The exhibition started this morning in Knokke-Heist in the Cultural Center "Scharpoord". It's a combined exhibition between the "Vrij Atelier" and the "Academie" and it's really worth a visit!

Here are a couple of pictures to give you an idea... But a visit will give you so much more!!!

First some pictures of my Dynastes Hercules "Bug"... Finally finished a couple of weeks ago, especially for this exhibition.

I'm really pleased with the result and apparently it turned quite some heads at the exhibition. It's a success! Simply being able to show it and that it is a piece that was thrown on the wheel... is most enjoyable! I was most surprised to see that it survived the two firings in the kiln and that it shows no crack whatsoever! It gives me energy and will to create other "bugs" like this one, in the near future!

Here some more pictures of the pots I made in etruskian style. They are now glazed with an ash-glaze.

It gives them a natural colour, which I like for this kind of articles. They should be natural.

I'm mad about Dragons, so I made a pot with a Dragon that is aligned around the pot. Its head is actually on the lid of the pot. 

I had to cut his body with a wire so that you can lift the lid.

The piece is glazed in red obviously. I like the colour and the tail of the dragon that goes all around the pot. The legs are also a fine detail of the complete dragon. It has an agressive look...

I couldn't help myself making some little dragons as the exhibition is all about madness.

I thought of putting some little red dragons, simply made one evening out of some clay, just in front of the telly, watching a movie... They are just glazed in red.

And here I am.

Let's not forget my mad bird with some jewelry I made. Simple clay rolled in my hands, some clay I just added some cobalt oxide to get the deep blue colour. Next to the bird you can see a picture of a roman-influenced pot. It stands on lettle legs which are acutally lion heads. I particularly like the lid which sits neatly on top and has very fine detailed features. The lines on the body of the pot are a delicat touch too. It was most pleasant to make this one. Which is also simply glazed with an ash-glaze. Simple but classy!

Lof der Zotheid - Cultuurcentrum Scharpoord - 26th February till 11th March 2011 - Knokke-Heist.

I was in the library last week when my attention fell on some historian books about Etruskian and Roman art. It was a series of books which I took home and had a more detailed look at what the ceramic art was all about in that period. I was most surprised! And during a night my brain came up with some ideas...

On the first picture you can see some drinking saucers, they used to drink wine and other beverages. I made my version, with a little influence of that time. They used to be made either from clay or bronze or other metals. 

The next step will of course be to make an interesting glaze... 

The next picture shows two bowls with just a little touch of decoration I got from the books. As they used a lot of "applied on top decoration" I thought of putting some "nails or bolts". Here aswelle I will need to make a interesting but natural looking glaze...

The last picture shows a goblet that I threw with also applied decorations. Some button like applications. You can clearly see the traces of putty that I used to stick the decorations on the object.

These objects are now drying slowly and will be going in the kiln one of the next weeks for the first "bisque" firing... So a little patience to see the final result in a couple of weeks...

I guess I will glaze all objects in the same glaze, as this is kind of a little collection. If the result is nice, I just might make some more!

Last firing of 2010... was a very succesfull one! And the real succes was my little black bird that came out of the kiln just perfectly!

It was quite a surprise because I wasn't sure that the black glazing would be like I wanted it to be. Even the red nose of the little bird was quite nice! I was particularly amazed by the black glaze that was really neatly melted and created a nice smooth surface even in the cracks and where two parts of clay were connected. You never really know what to expect... But I was very pleased with the result.

I have also made some nice plates and bowls, large and small ones all glazed with an ash-glaze, I use quite a lot. It gives the pieces a natural tone, which I quite like. On different types of clay you also get a different result. I will also try and make some ash-glazes with other types of ashes in 2011. So keep following my progress on this blog.

Here's a larger mixing bowl or dish or salad bowl, I also made. You can also see that the glaze colours darker where the layers are thicker. Even though it is quite thin, I like to see different colours appear.

And here are some more candle holders. The upper surface of the candle holders is treated in a special way so a design appears. The final creation is simply coloured with cobalt oxide wash and a thin layer of transparent glaze. Just to protect the holder. I quite like to make these. It's an intersting technique as you already know from previous articles and I'm sure I'll make more of these in 2011. 

I plan to create some decorative effects on the final product to give it a personal and unique touch. More to follow soon! Happy New Year to all of you!

These are a serie of bowls I made. They are simple forms, thrown on the wheel, and only the outside is finished and the foot of the bowl aswell.

You can notice that I got two different colours in the glaze, although it 's the same glaze I used. It's mainly the type of clay that I used that determines the colour of the glaze.

I used a simple ash-glaze recipe :

40% of ashes from my woodstove. I burn mainly pallets I get from work or other reject wood.

40% of kali feldspath, that I buy from my pottery shop.

20% of kaolin, that I also buy from my pottery shop.

Now, important is that I sieve my ashes through a very fine laboratory sieve (I got from a very good friend). This means that a lot of undesired particles are gone! This way I get a very fine and soft glaze with a smooth surface, ideal for dishes from which we eat!

Notice that all I make is always fired at 1260°C so that all pots are watertight and also dishwasher proof! 

This is a nice little teapot. I particularly am glad that the snout of the teapot is nicely done and fits perfectly on this teapot.

You can clearly see my stamp on the side of the pot.

I used a S5 glaze that I bought in my ceramics supply shop in Blankenberge (Johan De Waey). He makes a lovely deep blue glaze that up to now I have not managed to make myself.

I applied three layers of glaze (air-pistol) but I could have applied more, I noticed after it was fired. The inside is nicer, as I simply poured the glaze inside and then emptied it throught the snout.

A nice teapot that I will use for many years to come!!!

Here are some latest creations that came out of the kiln on 1st December 2010.

This is a pot made with a specific technique so that the surface crackels.

You first throw a cylinder, then you apply a chemical substance. When the surface is dry, you then carve lines in the surface. You can use all kind of sharp objects to make lines, circles and other patterns.

Then you apply pressure from the inside and form a round shape. The lines and carves will then widen and a "craquelé" effect will be visible.

I learnt the technique from Hans (http://www.pottenbakken.be/).

Later you can finish the bottom of the object and then fire it in the kiln at 1000°C. The next step is of course applying a colour to the product. I applied a layer of cobalt oxide solution in water. I used rather a lot of cobalt oxide, to get a nice deep blue colour. I sprayed it on using an air pistol. After that I simply applied a thin layer of transparent glaze. I then fired the pot to 1260°C to get this result!

This second creation is also a new technique I recently learned from a colleague-potter.

It's a technique he copied from a famous potter. It is actually a pot in a pot and thrown upside down. It's my first try at this kind of pottery creation and I'm pretty happy with the result.

I actually used the same decorative technique as the pot above, so cobalt oxide and transparent glaze.

And honestly, in winter time, it's so nice to have on a table!

I'm actually making more of these, but on the recent ones I use another decorative technique for the top. You'll read more soon!

Et voici le résultat! Dolores, une amie d'une amie, m'a demandé si elle pouvait me prendre en photo, pour un projet qu'elle doit faire dans ses cours de photographie... C'est bien la première fois qu'on me pose cette question, donc j'ai vite dit oui. Et voici le résultat :

c'est vraiment beau de voir l'argile se faufiller entre les doigts de la main...

J'avais vraiment pensé que sur photo ça donnerait si bien.

la forme des doigts qui forment l'argile... tout doucement, ce pot qui prend une forme, puis une autre,...

... cette douceur dans les photos.

... et pourtant, la vitesse du tour donne un aspect étrange aux photos!

Faut signaler qu'il faisait 5°C dans le jardin à ce moment...

J'avais donc pas chaud et j'avais pris de l'argile que j'avais mis près du chauffage et aussi de l'eau chaude pour tourner, afin que mes mains ne gèlent pas... Ce qu'il ne faut pas faire pour se faire prendre en photo! Hihi!

Et voici les dernières photos... très jolies, je trouve.

La forme des doigts qui arrivent à former une pièce en argile, si jolie, un bol, une assiette, une tasse... tout juste en employant ses mains, ces doigts...
